Half Marathon - Cross country

Latest Event : GoBeyond Ultra Half Marathon - October 2011 in South Weald

SouthWeald Half Marathon

Half Marathon, 13.5 miles cross country in South Weald park Brentwood. This is one of my favourite events of the year, its off road, through muddy paths, up and down hills and thick forest. It provides some great challenges and rewarding views as you pace around the 6 laps.

Each lap, just over 2 miles long starts downhill in an open field allowing you to pick up speed but you need to maintain that pace as the next stretch is a very long uphill run taking you into the forest. The forest path winds its way around a twisty path requiring you to hop over 2 large ditches, so lots of care needed on this part. Coming out of the forest leads you to the final straight towards the finish line, but its a long way up that hill with the last 30 seconds taking you speeding downhill to the finish line itself, ready for the next lap.

This year the weather was good, no rain like last year so the ground was dry in most places. I started off near the front and made good progress for the first few laps. I then suffered a muscle pull so i walked most of the last lap but somehow did manage to beat last years time by a few minutes, 2hrs 18. It just goes to show that even though I did train for this, more off road training was needed. So, thats a lesson for next year !

What else am I upto ?

Its coming to the end of the year right now ( November 2011 ) and I am hopefully trying to slot one more run in this year. Other than that my training continues as I have recently started running in the busy streets of London. Looking forward to next year - watch this space for more events.
