June 2012 - Ben Nevis Challenge
MacMillan Cancer Support - Ben Nevis Challenge Scotland
"One of our toughest UK hikes, this is a physically challenging event, but it is also a hugely rewarding experience that will help make a big difference to the lives of people affected by cancer."
I will be undertaking my biggest charity event to date in June this year.
Organised by Macmillan cancer support, ‘the Ben Nevis Challenge
2012’ in Scotland. This is a hiking event which takes me and about 50 other
people to the summit of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, 1,344 metres
(4,408 ft) above sea level.
It won’t be an easy walk in the park, it’s an 8 hour trek depending on the
weather and there is a drop of about 10c at the top in temperature. My
training is on-going and I am looking forward to raising 600.00 if not more.
I hope you can all help me out with this year’s event to make a big difference to peoples lives. All of your money will go
direct to the charity and I am paying for the trip myself.
I need your support

Half Marathon - Cross country
Last Major Event : GoBeyond Ultra Half Marathon - October 2011 in South Weald
"13 miles up and down hill, through fields, mud and forest, not to mention the rain..."
Half Marathon, 13.5 miles cross country in South Weald park Brentwood. This is one of my favourite events of the year, its off road,
through muddy paths, up and down hills and thick forest. It provides some great
challenges and rewarding views as you pace around the 6 laps.
Each lap, just over 2 miles long starts downhill in an open field
allowing you to pick up speed but you need to maintain that pace as the
next stretch is a very long uphill run taking you into the forest. The
forest path winds its way around a twisty path requiring you to hop over 2
large ditches, so lots of care needed on this part. Coming out of the forest
leads you to the final straight towards the finish line, but its a long way
up that hill with the last 30 seconds taking you speeding downhill to the
finish line itself, ready for the next lap.
This year the weather was good, no rain like last year so the ground was dry
in most places. I started off near the front and made good progress for the
first few laps. I then suffered a muscle pull so i walked most of the last lap but
somehow did manage to beat last years time by a few minutes,
2hrs 18. It just goes to show that even though I did train for this, more off
road training was needed. So, thats a lesson for next year !
